Why It's Almost Impossible to Do a Quintuple Jump | WIRED

  • At this year's Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, we may see quad corks in Big Air Snowboarding or in Freestyle Skiing -- and we'll see quad twists and quad jumps in Figure Skating. But have we reached the limit of what's possible? To do a quad, a skater's got less than a second to turn their body four times in the air. WIRED's Robbie Gonzalez set out to find out why five...is almost impossible.

The reason you felt so dizzy when turning was because you weren't spotting. If you have your eyes trained to a certain area and then keep your head there until the last second until you have to turn you won't get as disoriented.

    • ebesmom
      ebesmom 15 päivää sitten

Actually, figure skaters generally don't "spot" like dancers. It's too detrimental to their rpms.

I think I read somewhere that Jon Boyang actually started the quad wars :D not really by landing one of the first quad, but by having (I think) 4 quads in a program, and that's how skaters realized that they can add more quads than before :O ... then there comes nathan making 5 quads ^_^

Frank Bare Jr. should have had a part in this video. He was an American freestyle skier that Wiki called, "one of the innovators in the sport". He was the first to perform a quadruple back flip on skis, but the trick he performed was a triple twisting quadruple back flip (with no helmet by the way), and no one did the quad back flip for almost 20 years after him.

I hate this video. So many things wrong with this. Didn't even take in the other athletes who's tricks are just as much impressive (trickers, freerunners, freestyle Trampoline) I've seen a sextuple twist on tramp, several times (6 Spins) as well as 5 FLIPS in other instances . I hate these videos because the people who make them, aren't physically able to do or understand the physical limits of others, and so they place unwarranted limits on people for absolute no reason. There will always be records that are broken and there will always be level ups, as long as these extreme sports exist. Deal with it. And maybe give more respect to the Trickers or Trampers who pull of more insane and more impressive tricks than this. If you aren't physically able to pull off similarly impressive and crazy tricks as these athletes, then don't assume their limitations and put unwarranted limitations on them.

    • Jennifer Zhang
      Jennifer Zhang 3 kuukautta sitten

This is a video about figure skating. Tricks on the trampoline and jumps in figure skating are completely different. People get far more air time on trampolines. I don't think it is fair to compare. Remember, jumps in Figure Skating is just like jumping into the air and spinning. Nothing to propel yourself but your own body.
Either way, Figure Skating isn't an extreme sport, it's a mixture of artistic ability and athleticism. Extreme sports can get their own video.

Figure skating: Skate around the ice in big fast swoops. Occasionally jump straight up in the air and spin around as many times as you can before you land - and don't stumble when you land.

you can spin more in skating because ice is slippery and you're running on blades. while snow is supple and you're running on boards.

+Ela Darn. Yeah some of the girls on my team ( because I compete in synchro) have to do axels in the program but there was this one girl who lost her axel. The coach told her she had to get it back though so she worked her butt off to get her's back. This other girl at my school keeps loosing and regaining her axel. Lol I was to afraid to ever jump so I just do my moves and ice dance.

+Bela Wood ya ikr. Some of those girls are lucky enough to keep their body though. Like there was this one girl at the four continents that we watched today and she is 18 and her body shape is very thin, so I'm not surprised she can do all her jumps lol. But yeah the body shape is very important I agree, cause sometimes it makes things more difficult/ easy than for other people.
