Talvisota - The Winter War - Sabaton History 006

  • Julkaistu 14.03.2019
  • This war is modern version of David versus Goliath. The Sabaton song 'Talvisota' is about the Winter War that took place in late 1939 till the early spring of 1940 between Finland and the Soviet union. Against all odds, and an overwhelming amount of Red Army Soldiers, the Finnish army manage to hold off the Soviet advance for longer than anyone could have foreseen.

This week marks 79 years since the Winter War ended. On 13 March 1940, the guns in Finland stopped shooting after over three months of heavy fighting. The Finns fought better and harder than anyone expected, of course with help from numerous factors. Make sure to check out Indy's World War Two channel, where he covers World War Two exactly 79 years after it went down, in realtime. It's very cool 🤘 -> ficlips.com/user/worldwartwo

The Finns did also make counteroffers that the Russians refused, the Finns weren't entirely stubborn to not accepting any border change. They were ready to change the border in the isthmus north, but Hanko was a definite no go.

Ok so 6 or 7 years ago, in an online MMORPG called Travian, I met a Finnish guy called Janne who had a link to The Price of a MIle video on his profile. That guy and that link introduced me to Sabaton and I've loved them ever since. Not many people driving through rural Pennsylvania blasting Sabaton. Then about five years ago I found this guy Indy Neidel on FIclips doing the coolest, most informative documentary series I've ever seen - The Great War, and I've been mad about Indy's projects ever since. So just imagine my delight! Thanks so much you guys. And in the one in a million chance you see this Janne, sprphilly from Travian says thanks to you too.

if you think about it, Finland was one of the most helpful nations of ww2 simply for having Germany suicide into the Soviets more so than it would have otherwise.
Who knows, maybe if not for the winter war the German high command may have not been cocky and followed Hitler's orders to go south the first time around

Funny mentality: when Russia loses (at first) against Finland because of winter - it means Ruissia can't fight against brave Finns. Later, when Russia wins against Germans with some help from "severe Russian cold" it means Russia still don't know how to fight, winter won the war for them. Anyone sees some double standarts here or is it just me?

It's kinda funny that some use the winter and the cold weather as one of the excuses for the Soviet's poor success in Winter War. It wasn't like the climate (or the terrain for that matter) drastically changed after the border.
Finnish soldiers had pretty much their own clothes to wear when Winter War broke out and there weren't like white camouflage clothes for each Finnish soldier. Most did their own from bed sheets and such. What I mean by all of this is that Soviet's might have been badly equipped, but Finland had it even worse. They just adapted and improvised because they really didn't have a choice.

    • Sabaton History
      Sabaton History  Päivä sitten

The winter did play a part though. Not just because the Soviets were ill-equiped, but also because of little daylight (restricting the utility of their air force) for example.

There's some really interesting parallels to the Winter War and the First Italo-Ethiopian War. Both were superpower countries with enormous armies that failed to subdue and subjugate a smaller population who used terrain and their enemies incompetence to their advantage.

It's strange really. First you say that there wasn't entire Soviet army, and then you say that Finland fought against entire Red Army.
Anyway, you said correctly about bad preparations of Soviets at start, and that there was bad landscape, hard to proceed for an army.
But you forget to mention, that at this war Stalin was wanted to know how Red Army was prepared for a bigger war. And during this Winter War(and especially after) he began to improve and upgrade Red Army and other things. So, this war at some point actually help Soviets to win against Germany. "Нет худа без добра", как говорится

Ironically, but if the Finns had not kicked the asses of our army in this war, the Soviet leadership would not have made any conclusions and the position of the Soviet troops in the war with the Germans in 1941 would have been worse. And the Germans had the opposite effect, because thanks to the Winter War, they underestimated the Red Army, just as the Soviets underestimated the Finns. But Hitler would have attacked the Soviet Union anyway. Therefore, it rather influenced their preparation for war, rather than the very decision to start it.

After the Continuation War and Lapland War, Finnish veterans and officers cached weapons, just in case for a possible Soviet takeover. Some of them were arrested by the government.
Legend goes: After the incident Finnish government wanted to show their good side to Soviets and the Allied supervision commission stationed in Finland. Finnish delegation asked Stalin: "What should we do with these men, they were caching weapons for some reason? Stalin´s answer: Do whatever you want. Our soldiers would have done the same in case of German occupation".
